“The panel listened to hours of contradictory presentations by officials from Pfizer, the C.D.C., the Israeli government and independent experts about the waning effectiveness of Pfizer and other vaccines over time.”

“Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, Israel’s head of public health services, said the summer’s rise in the number of hospitalized patients who had been fully vaccinated with Pfizer’s vaccine was “scary.” She said 60 percent of severely or critically ill patients and 45 percent of those who died during what she called the fourth surge had received two injections of Pfizer’s vaccine.”

“…in a remarkable public display of internal dissension, two F.D.A. scientists wrote a medical journal article this week arguing that there was no credible evidence yet in support of boosters for the general population. Those officials, who are leaving the agency this fall, joined outside experts at the Friday meeting in casting doubt on whether Pfizer’s request should be approved.”

“Dr. Philip Krause, one of the F.D.A. vaccine experts who wrote the medical journal review, criticized Pfizer’s presentation of data that had not been peer-reviewed or evaluated by the F.D.A., arguing that problems in the modeling in a study underpinning the company’s case understated the vaccine’s efficacy.”

“The government and the industry are obscuring the true rate of antipsychotic drug use on vulnerable residents.”

“Antipsychotic drugs — which for decades have faced criticism as “chemical straitjackets” — are dangerous for older people with dementia, nearly doubling their chance of death from heart problems, infections, falls and other ailments. But understaffed nursing homes have often used the sedatives so they do not have to hire more staff to handle residents.”

“The pandemic has battered the industry. Nursing home employment is down more than 200,000 since early last year. As staffing dropped, the use of antipsychotics rose.”

“A Washington Post-ABC News poll asked unvaccinated workers whose employers have yet to impose a vaccine mandate what they were likely to do if being vaccinated was required.

The poll found 16 percent of unvaccinated workers would get the shot, 35 percent would ask for a medical or religious exemption and 42 percent would quit.

Without an exemption, 18 percent said they would comply and 72 percent said they would quit.”

“The retirements of Dr. Marion Gruber, director of the Office of Vaccines Research and Review at FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and Dr. Philip Krause, deputy director of the office, were announced in an internal agency email sent on Tuesday and shared with CNN by the FDA.”

“Officials within the FDA were stunned by the news that Gruber and Krause were leaving the agency. One described it as a ‘big loss’ for the FDA and noted that it caught leadership off guard. CNN has reported that morale at the agency, which still has no permanent leadership, has been eroded by the intense workload brought on by the pandemic.”

“A source familiar with the situation told CNN there have been frustrations within the FDA when it comes to vaccines.”

“…the largest issue seems to be that by setting a goal for boosters, the White House is getting ahead of where the science is and ‘prejudging what the FDA would say.’”

“Though Biden’s political aides have stressed their booster rollout plan relies entirely on decisions by the FDA and CDC, there is concern that they are publicly pre-judging the determination before all the data has been thoroughly reviewed.”
